A warm front lifting northward across the area on afternoon of Thursday, September 20, 2018, colided with a lake breeze boundary and strong thunderstorms developed as a result. The strongest cell formed over Geauga County and quickly began showing signs of rotation on doppler radar. A tornado warning was issued for parts of Geauga, Ashtabula, and Trumbull Counties.
Damage was reported near the town of Middlefield in Geauga County around 2:30 p.m. The storm moved southeastward into northwestern Trumbull County where additional damage occurred, mostly to trees near West Farmington. The storm gradually weakened as it continued southeast toward the city of Warren.
Damage surveys were conducted on Friday, September 21, 2018 by the National Weather Service. It was determined that two EF-1 tornadoes touched down near Middlfield, and one of those tornadoes did track into northwestern Trumbull County, lifting just northwest of West Farmington.
Structural damage was reported in Geauga County, however the damage in Trumbull County was confined mainly to trees.
